- I recently installed a US Robotics Sporster Vi 14.4 faxmodem with voice
- mail.
-
- While it works fine for data and faxes, the voice mail functions rarely
- work properly.
-
- The modem will hang up on callers a few seconds into their message.
-
- Callers will leave a thirty second long message, but the message that I
- receive is only the first few seconds. Occasionally, I don't receive
- even a portion of their message - callers have left (or thought they
- left) messages, but nothing showed up on my voice mail.
-
- I've already decreased the silence sensitivity and increased the message
- length and silence detection periods to their maximum, but this has had
- no effect.
-
- Sometimes, the modem will not answer the phone at all.
-
- Other times, it will pick up the line, but not play my outgoing message.
-
- Occasionally, when I call in to retrieve my messages, the modem will not
- hang up the line once I've finished. As a result, my telephone will ring
- busy until I can return home to reset the modem.
-
- The call display / caller ID function does not work. Rather than showing
- the seven digit telephone number, it will display the last 6 digits of
- the number, followed by an unrelated letter or character.
-
- It is difficult, and occasionally impossible, to answer my telephone if
- the voice mail picks up the call before I can answer it. Sometimes, the
- computer will answer an incoming call after I have already answered it
- (ie. ten seconds into a conversation)
-
- The modem's built in speaker is terrible -- listening to messages through
- it is like listening to a child's toy walkie-talkie.
-
- I know that the problem is not with the line or the telephone company, as
- my previous modem worked perfectly (unfortunately, it was only 2400
- baud).
-
- I have tried to get help from US Robotics but have been unsuccessful. I
- first sent a list of these problems to their Compuserve e-mail address,
- and received back a list of FAQ's that weren't even related to these
- problems. Three weeks ago, I sent a long fax detailing everything that
- was wrong, but they never bothered to respond to me.
-
- Does anybody know how I can fix these problems, or am I simply stuck with
- a lemon? I paid extra for both the USR name and the voice mail
- capabilities, but I'm now regretting my purchase!
-
- Please help!
